Spooky or Sweet: What Are Your Plans for Halloween?

It's fun to make memories that I can look back on later. This is especially true now that I have my own family. My son, A, is getting older and is beginning to remember different experiences he's had and talk about them a year later. Holidays are some of the best experiences as a kid and I want A to be able to look back and remember the magic-like feeling of holidays and recall some fun things we did as a family. Plus, it's just fun to do something different every once and a while. There's always trick or treating but it's fun to have a little variety in each year. Below are my plans for celebrating Halloween.

Decorate With Carved Pumpkins

We usually do something fun with my side of the family around Halloween. Last year, we did a fall party at my parents' house where we played cornhole, did a potato sack race, carved pumpkins, and ate snacks. This year, we are going to another fall party at my parents' house and we will likely carve pumpkins again. A likes carved pumpkins because he gets to watch the process of how it's done and then it's something different and fun to decorate our porch.

Monster Movie Marathon

Every so often it's fun to watch a creepy movie. I enjoy watching movies with some form of monster sometimes because it gives me something to fear during the movie but isn't actually real so I don't need to stress about it after the movie. The movies I plan to watch are Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Dracula Untold, and The Silence. I grew up being read Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark in elementary school and it was fun and creepy. Honestly, it may have even started my interest in reading scary books. I've seen The Silence before and it was pretty creepy. I want to make the whole thing fun by popping some popcorn and having some other snacks.

Share Scary Stories

A has this thing where sometimes he will find a flashlight, shine it under his face, and tell us a scary story. I'm not sure where he learned it but I want to make a fun night out of it by turning it into a whole experience. I figure the three of us can sit in a circle in the dark and take turns with the flashlight and telling our scary stories. I think A will think it's lots of fun. I remember taking turns telling stories with my grandmother in her backyard or with my family around the campfire when we were camping and it was lots of fun.
