3 Practical Steps to Cultivating a Positive Attitude in Daily Life

Having a positive attitude has led me to be happier overall, have more patience, and be more kind. Over the last few years, I have really tried to work on having a more positive attitude. It has definitely not been easy but I would say it has definitely been worth it as I believe my quality of life has increased significantly. I by no means always have a positive attitude but I have come a long way from the very pessimistic person I used to be. Below is how I developed a positive attitude.

Treat Myself to Some Self-Care Every Day

For me, self-care is getting some exercise in, making sure I do something that I enjoy, eating healthy and also allowing myself to have a treat once in a while, and being kind towards myself. When I am taking care of myself, I am more easily able to relax and enjoy my day. Whereas when I am hungry, tired, and focused only on work and school, I tend to me a bit more grumpy. I had to eventually realize that I can't be much help to anyone else if I am not even taking care of myself.

Practice Gratitude

When things are tough, I try to focus on what I am grateful for. Even when it feels like things are going so wrong, I always know that I am grateful for my family, my home, my job, having two reliable vehicles, and so on. Even when things are going well I try to pay attention to what I can be grateful for in that moment because I never want to take anything for granted. Practicing gratitude helps me focus on what is important and prevents me from getting caught up in becoming distressed about something temporary.

Focus on the Good Things, However Small They Are

I have found that there is usually at least a little bit of good in every situation. When I am going through something challenging, I focus on the fact that it is helping me grow and become stronger as a person. I also make sure to pay attention to the little things that go well in my day. Maybe it's that I got a lot of exercise in, ate mostly healthy, got good news about something, or that we spent a good amount of quality time together as a family. Whatever it is, it is worth noticing.
